Collage is the art of recycling. It takes the old and makes it new again
through fragmenting, re-contextualizing and combining imagery in new and interesting ways.

This six-week course explores the many possibilities that collage can offer.
The workshop starts Saturday, January 11 and runs through Saturday, February 15,. 2025.

TOPICS EXPLORE DURING THIS WORKSHOP

Looking at Collage
• Brief history of collage from the 20th century until now.
• Weekly introduction to artists working in the medium of collage.
• Exploring the varied styles and techniques used in collage.
• Posting your projects and viewing other’s projects using weekly online galleries.

Getting Started
• Introduction to materials and processes.
• Understanding color and how to effectively use it for creating strong composition.
• An overview of simple elements and principles of good design and how to use them in your art.
• Sourcing material to use for collage.
• Creating image boards the generate new ideas.

Techniques
• Using a dry-glue technique to adhere materials to various substrates.
• The process of creating a décollage. (the art of tearing away)
• Fun ways to create Mash-up collages
• Using Gel Plates to create collage elements and transfers.
• Creating a layered collage using various transfer methods.
• Painting with paper.

This class will meet every Saturday at 2pm est via Zoom for a approximately 2 hours and will use an online classroom called Canvas, which will allow participant to share work, view videos, demos and projects. All video demos will be recorded to watch at any time. Everyone will have full access to all the content for 3 months. All content is also downloadable.

Randel Plowman received his M.F.A. in printmaking from University of Wisconsin-Madison and his B.F.A. from Northern Kentucky University. He has exhibited in solo and juried exhibitions throughout the United States; in addition, his work appears in many public and private collections in North America and abroad, his work has been cited in numerous publications, including The New York Times and USA Today; been featured in The Paris Review, How Design magazine, Artist Magazine and Somerset Studio. He is the author of two books, Masters: Collage, and The Collage Workbook: How To Get Started And Stay Inspired, voted Best Art Instruction Book of 2012 by the Library Journal. Plowman is currently a full time professor in printmaking at Northern Kentucky University.
